Important dates for December 12-16th

We are having some community building assemblies to celebrate the values of:   kindness, belonging and the season of giving.  On different days next week we will be coming together as a school to sing and dance (giving the gift of music).  Here are the dates and times for our gathering just in case you want to join us.  Each class will be doing different dances on different days and fun dress themes if you are interested (see below).

Don't forget that Friday, December 16th  is our last day before the break and it's an early dismissal day.  Students will be finished at 11:30 and report cards will go home that day.  
Donations

  • Christmas time is traditionally associated with a time of giving and sharing. In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, we will be running a Christmas hamper campaign from December 5th through to December 13th. During this time please send your cheques or cash donations to the school in a sealed envelope marked ‘Christmas Hampers’. We will be distributing gift cards from all funds collected to Evanston families who would appreciate a little extra during the holiday season.
Lost & Found
  • We have accumulated many lost items in our lost and found.  Please take a moment with your child to make sure none of the items belong to you.  We will be donating any items left over after December 16th.

We have been working on number of the day this week.  It is a great strategy for expanding our understanding of number sense.  Here is an example of what it can look like.  It gives students a way to practice multiple ways to work with a particular number.  A new number is picked everyday.   You can practice this at home with your parents.  Another category to add to this when you talk at home about numbers is:  Where in the world would  I find this number of things?      For example I might find 615 students in a middle school.  Or 615 dollars in my bank account.  Or 615 paintings in a gallery or 615 cattle on a ranch.   We have also been challenging ourselves to understand how  fractions and division are connected .  Below is a picture of how we can divide the number 368 in half.  Or, another way to look at is 368 divided by 2:  You can see that we have modeled how to divide this numbe...

Welcome to our new student in Room 123, his name is Toluwani and we are very happy to have him join our community.   If we attached an EEG (stands for Electroencephalography and measures the activity of neurons in the brain) to your brains in Room 123 today your firing neurons would light up the community of Evanston. You were on fire with the thinking today! Global Mind in action. As per usual, we went on a learning journey beginning with the Metis people, identity through meeting (via video) David Bouchard.  He is an amazing inspirational Metis author who happens to have written more than 50 books in English and French.
