Teamwork Tuesday - Using Global Mind to Create

Well today was a day filled with collaboration as we worked with our Kindergarten buddies  on a design challenge to create a sensory tool. Thanks for letting us hang out in your learning space, Kindergarten students!  The criteria was it must be so appealing that you just need to touch it. It must spark your sense of sight, hearing and touch.  It must be have a function.

We had a variety of materials to use and it was fascinating to see what everybody used.  Each design definitely hit the bullseye and met the criteria.  Our plan is to test these sensory tools by putting them up on the bulletin board outside of Room 155, we can't wait to hear what people think, and if they help learners when they need a body/brain break.  

 Here are some of our thoughts on why we love design thinking in Room 123:

What do we love about design thinking?

"Showing your creativity."

"We like using materials and making our prototypes better."
"We like getting feedback to upgrade your prototypes."
"To up your game."  
"When we make our prototypes we make connections, visualize, make inferences and write about them."  
"I made a connection, it’s connected to the reading powers connected to inferencing on some tv shows.  The guessing game." 
"With design thinking you can do whatever you want,  you can use different materials for example: cardboard, cloth, plastic, wire, fabric, pom poms, glue, cotton, hot glue, pipe cleaners.  Egg cartons -- With design thinking you are constantly upcycling materials." 
















 Our next creative task was with our grade three friends in Ms. Pearson's room.  We are collaboratively writing new lyrics for the Twelve Days of Christmas.  We are using our background knowledge to add alliteration and rhyme to our lyrics.  There are some creative themes emerging.  Stay tuned for updates. We have been working on number of the day this week.  It is a great strategy for expanding our understanding of number sense.  Here is an example of what it can look like.  It gives students a way to practice multiple ways to work with a particular number.  A new number is picked everyday.   You can practice this at home with your parents.  Another category to add to this when you talk at home about numbers is:  Where in the world would  I find this number of things?      For example I might find 615 students in a middle school.  Or 615 dollars in my bank account.  Or 615 paintings in a gallery or 615 cattle on a ranch.   We have also been challenging ourselves to understand how  fractions and division are connected .  Below is a picture of how we can divide the number 368 in half.  Or, another way to look at is 368 divided by 2:  You can see that we have modeled how to divide this numbe...

Mindful Monday - From Metis to Snow Shoes to Polar Bear Paws

Welcome to our new student in Room 123, his name is Toluwani and we are very happy to have him join our community.   If we attached an EEG (stands for Electroencephalography and measures the activity of neurons in the brain) to your brains in Room 123 today your firing neurons would light up the community of Evanston. You were on fire with the thinking today! Global Mind in action. As per usual, we went on a learning journey beginning with the Metis people, identity through meeting (via video) David Bouchard.  He is an amazing inspirational Metis author who happens to have written more than 50 books in English and French.
