Tinkering, Analyzing, and Researching on Tuesday

Bowling to measure meters The measuring with trundle wheels continues today.  We had to record our data for distance, perimeter and length of large animals. Other names for the trundle wheel are:  "A  surveyor's wheel , also called a  clickwheel ,  hodometer ,  waywiser ,  trundle wheel ,  measuring wheel  or  perambulator  is a device for measuring distance."   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surveyor%27s_wheel The weather was so wonderful today that students got to do the drum fit outside.  Here are some photos of their workout.   Our animal research into endangered species continues to expand our background knowledge and synthesize connections between our learning conversations.  Here are some examples of student learning their visual sketch journals.  This learning task gives students an opportunity to inquire into a real world problem:  the impacts of human ch...

Endangered Mammals and Mindful Measuring of Meters on Monday

Image
Our day began today discussing animal classifications and their attributes for sorting.  At table groups students wrote as many mammals as they could think of. For our 30 x 30 nature challenge we used a new measuring tool called a trundle wheel.  We discovered that the trundle wheel helps us measure irregular perimeters.  Students explored the length of large distances and the perimeters of large areas with the wheels they were very mindful and cooperative as they worked in groups of 4.  You have to listen very carefully to hear the click of the wheel.  Each click represents 1 meter.   trundle wheel  teamwork  We began some animal research this afternoon and each student choose an endangered species to learn about habitat, diet, adaptations, life cycle and threats.  Our neurons were sparked this morning as we began this exploration by talking about the pangolin, an amazing mammal that is criticall...

Learning Highlights from May 24-26, 2017

Red-winged black bird Wonderful thinking, observation, discovering, and collaboration occurred last week.  Here are some highlights of our learning: In math we continue on with our measurement exploration and created irregular polygons in our math journals to measure the perimeter.   A great opportunity to practice our mental math skills, using addition, multiplication and division. We have also been expanding our understanding of time as a measurement and connecting to activities that take about 1 min, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 1 hour.  Here are some of our ideas: What other ideas can you think of together at home.   This week we have been lucky to try out the gym fit drum kits .  This is a powerful tool for using coordination,  endurance, core strength, timing, collaboration and communication.  Here is a link for you to discover more about it:   https://www.drum.fit/ Thursday was a spec...
