Wondering about Kindness and Global Comparisons on Wednesday

What a great day we had today!  Pink Shirt Day was our first wondering task?  What is it?  Where did it come from?  Why pink?  We found out the story behind Pink Shirt Day here's a link to a video that tells the story:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjmf3I1_ZhU  These boys and the entire school in Nova Scotia demonstrated the power of activism.  Standing up for what is right!  They have become ambassadors for anti-bullying.

We also explored the website https://pinkshirtday.brandalliance.com/ and discovered that the theme for this year is make nice.  This prompted us to write our own pledge for kindness today and everyday.  Did you know kindness is universal?  Meaning it is recognized everywhere in the world.

Here is our pledge. I created it using an online app called ransom note generator http://www.ransomizer.com/
We found out that the pink shirt is recognized internationally, which gave us a chance to build our vocabulary and figure out what international means by splitting it into it's morphographs and using our background knowledge.  INTER = between NATION = country AL means related to
I asked where have you heard the word nation before and some of you remembered the United Nations.  We know that the united nations represents all the countries in the world and that uni means one -- So putting united means one big group representing the world.  International means:  used by many nations or countries.  International is a central theme to grade three since we travel and learn about other countries around the globe.  International symbols, languages, traditions, quality of life are all part of establishing identity.

We then explored a new website on learnalberta, online resources called culture grams.  This is a great website for comparing and contrasting life our lives in Canada to other countries.  Here is a link for you to check out.  http://www.learnalberta.ca/OnlineReferenceCentre.aspx?lang=en
