Feature Friday - Prototypes Emerge

Another full day in Room 123.  We went from hearing and sound testing and experiments, to building our first prototypes, to Halloween riddles.  We used elastic bands to hear,  feel and see vibrations. We learned that sound travels in air and water in longitudinal waves (the wave is running lengthwise).  We noticed that the tightness of the stretch in the  elastic band changed the wave.  Here is a link to a video we watch to expand our thinking about the transmission of sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkNJvZINSEY

The sudden  snowfall today provided us with another observation about sound, we noticed that the snow on the ground acted as a kind of insulator and diffused  the echoing of sound waves at recess.  It was like nature's sound muffler.  We couldn't have asked for a more fitting experience.  

Next, on our learning journey was to start building our first prototype using cardboard.  You really proved how creative and flexible you are in your thinking.  Especially, when I told you that we were only using cardboard and a couple of elastic bands for this first prototype.  Your mindful focus and determination are obvious in these photos:

We have been working on number of the day this week.  It is a great strategy for expanding our understanding of number sense.  Here is an example of what it can look like.  It gives students a way to practice multiple ways to work with a particular number.  A new number is picked everyday.   You can practice this at home with your parents.  Another category to add to this when you talk at home about numbers is:  Where in the world would  I find this number of things?      For example I might find 615 students in a middle school.  Or 615 dollars in my bank account.  Or 615 paintings in a gallery or 615 cattle on a ranch.   We have also been challenging ourselves to understand how  fractions and division are connected .  Below is a picture of how we can divide the number 368 in half.  Or, another way to look at is 368 divided by 2:  You can see that we have modeled how to divide this numbe...

Mindful Monday - From Metis to Snow Shoes to Polar Bear Paws

Welcome to our new student in Room 123, his name is Toluwani and we are very happy to have him join our community.   If we attached an EEG (stands for Electroencephalography and measures the activity of neurons in the brain) to your brains in Room 123 today your firing neurons would light up the community of Evanston. As per usual, we went on a learning journey beginning with the Metis people, identity through meeting (via video) David Bouchard.  He is an amazing inspirational Metis author who happens to have written more than 50 books in English and French.
