Tune into Your Reading Strategies

Thank to all of you wonderful parents who attended the conferences last week.  It was a pleasure to share our progress and learning strategies with you.  The home school connection is what makes our learning community and identity stronger in grade 3.

Today was a day of reorganizing as we reconnected after a long weekend, and rearranged our brains and bodies into a new seating plan.  Thanks to all of you for your flexible thinking and your willingness to try new table partners.  New faces = different perspectives,  ideas and new role model opportunities. This event gave us a chance to practice empathy, feeling how each other was feeling and providing support to our new friends.

We tried out our guided reading groups today and I was really proud of how you all persisted in the task.  Collaborative reading is a really powerful way to expand each other's thinking using the reading powers.  Having those thinking conversations, really pumps up the metacognition and gives you a chance to transform your thinking.  Here is a graphic that we talked about today in class before we began the groups.  These are strategies that thinking readers look for and identify in texts to help them understand what they are reading.  Our focus today was on asking questions, before, during and after the reading.  I know that questions were sparked for all of you as you read with your peers.  We often turn the title of books into a question.  This is a great strategy because it focuses your thinking as you read as you look for answers to your question in the text.

During conferences I discussed with some of you a great learning tool for building vocabulary called the Frayer Model.  I'm including a picture here of this model for you to see.  We will be using this framework this week to build out some new vocabulary words we are learning.
Here is some new vocabulary we learned this morning:
conserve = to save or protect,
conservation = the act of saving, restoring and protecting the environment, ecosystems, plants and wildlife.
deforestation = the act of removing/destroying wide areas of forest by cutting or burning trees.  We discussed some of the environmental impacts of deforestation, specifically the destruction of animal habitats which contributes to endangered species of plants and animals.
