Wangari's Wondering Wednesday
Wow, what a wondrous Wednesday learning all about a great global citizen and nobel prize winner called Wangari Maathai. Our investigation allowed us to practice the reading power transformation. We learned all about how she started the Green Belt Movement in Kenya and her commitment to conservation of our planet through tree planting. Here is a link to a video about a biographical children's book on her life, in case you would like to learn more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ug9ssHpdjg
Wangari was a leader, she taught the world that no matter how small you are, you can make a difference. Here is another link to a video we watched today about her main idea of taking small steps to make big changes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-btl654R_pY She gave the world hope and her legacy lives on today. Hmmm who does this remind you of?
Speaking of transformation we transformed our thinking by trying out our thinking tool the Frayer Model to build our understanding of one of our new vocabulary words, deforestation. We learned all about the morphographs that make up this word de = reverse or remove, forest = a large area covered mostly by trees and undergrowth, at = against, ion = act or process. So, deforestation is the act or process of removing a wide area of trees. By the way, the opposite of deforestation is reforestation. We learned that trees are one of the biggest carbon storage units and so it is so important that we protect all of our forests.
Here are some photos of us working to put our own thoughts into the Frayer Model and then sharing these ideas with each other.
