Friends of the Earth Friday

Curious wonderings about rocks and spelling were the theme for Friday in Room 123.  Here are some questions that pushed our thinking.

Have a look at this video to see how onions are connected to spelling.  http://ed.ted.com/lessons/making-sense-of-spelling-gina-cooke

After watching this video we made many connections back to morphographs and the final e rule.  From there we went to: what is the mineral in onions that makes you cry?  We discovered that it is sulfur.  Turns out they are really healthy for our bodies as well!

Did you know that minerals are the building blocks of rocks?  How about that every rock is made up of two or more minerals?  All of our food has minerals in it, can you figure out why?

If you are wondering about how whales fertilize the ocean have a look at this video:  How Whales Change the Climate.

We have started to explore fractions in math.  Here is a video that we watched in class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CA9XLJpQp3c
We are making connections between money and fractions.  For example there are 4 quarters in a whole circle.   4 quarters of pizza in a whole pizza, or 2 halves in a whole pizza.  There are 4 quarters in $1.00.    Fractions are also connected to division.

It was our first day of inline skating this afternoon.  I wonder if inline skating is connect to  rocks and minerals?  Here are some photos of students in action:
