Minding Global Goal #6 on Monday

Today we continued on our water inquiry to answer the question:  Why might water be important?
  • Access to clean water is a human right unfortunately not all people on earth have access to it.  Did you know that 780 million people do not have access to clean water and sanitation?

In grand conversations we began using a new thinking tool to help us Determine Importance of text.  Determining the Importance of what you are reading or viewing is very important, because it helps you zoom in on the main idea and message that the author is telling.

Determine means deciding what key words you want to capture that represent the important message.

Here are some of the key words we learned today:  sanitation, water poverty, drilling wells, action and support, local experts, conservation, protection, relief, drought, collaboration, disease,  agriculture, food security, health, school, women and girls.

From these key words we can of course connect back to the globals goals, gender equality, ending poverty, access to quality education, clean water and sanitation, and good health and well-being.  Here's a link to the global goals.org  http://www.globalgoals.org/#the-goals

Another strategy for determining importance is to look at the title of the book or video you will be reading or viewing and turn the title into a question.

For example today, we looked at three videos.  Here are the links:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPxMOzN0Uq4  Life Without Clean Water.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7gf2i1aQPI  Water for South Sudan.  http://www.endwaterpoverty.org/  Our human right to clean water and sanitation.

One of the titles was:   Life Without Clean Water  -- You could turn this into  questions such as Why is there life without Clean Water?  What happens in a life with clean water?  Who are these people who live without clean water?
When you turn titles into questions, immediately your brain will make inferences to answer these questions which gets you more focussed on watching or reading to check to see if you were correct.

Here are some student samples of this new thinking tool:
