Conversations and Scientific Investigations into Soil on Tuesday and Wednesday

Continuing to build our background knowledge about the rock cycle and it's connections to soil.  We have been using the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy in Grand Conversations to build our reading comprehension on articles about soil.

We learned a new vocabulary word:  carboniferous  and watched a couple of videos and learned about peat soil and the bog ecosystem as well as what the different layers of soil look like.  Each layer has a particular purpose and its important for the survival of plants and animals.  Here are some links for you to watch:  Soil Layers  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kybPmB1zBUw

Today we returned to the sediment jars in our classroom to create scientific sketches of what we see in these jars.  Close observation helps us understand the connection between erosion and sediment and how rocks break down and become different layers of sediment.   How are the rock cycle and sediment connected?  Why are they important?  What elements are responsible for creating sediment?  Hmmm.  Questions to ponder!

Sediment = matter that collects at the bottom of liquid.  Can you think of all of the ecosystems that you can find different sediment in the world?
