Home Reading Begins

Dear Parents:

As an extension to reading books online in RAZ kids, this week, we are beginning our home reading using classroom books. Please look for a coloured plastic folder that holds the following items:

  • A parent letter
  • Reading Power explanation sheet and Parent Guide
  • A book at the student's "just right level"

  • List of strategies to use while reading the book together
  • Home Reading Log to keep track of the books you are reading together and parents can initial.

Each Monday students will pick a new book to take home.  They can read with you for about 15 mins per night.  If you don't finish the entire book this is not a problem. It is not  a race to get finished the book.  Instead, this is  an opportunity for you to have a thinking conversation with your child as you read together.  This is what the reading power guide is for. Students know all about the reading powers and will be excited to teach them to you.   There is a list of strategies to follow in the package as well.    You can work on fluency (speed of reading) by reading a paragraph or page together several times to build familiarity with the text and to practice reading larger chunks of text at one time.  Students can also practice reading with expression to a stuffy or to a sibling or to you.

The books are to be returned on Thursday.  However, if you feel you want to keep the book over the weekend and return it Monday just let me know.

  •  For those parents and students who are coming to student led conferences you will get a chance to practice the home reading strategies with your child on Monday.

We are excited about this program and look forward to your support to make it successful.  Reading at home will help your child become a successful reader with metacognitive strategies.

Sincerely,

Ms. Hargreaves
