Mindful Math on Monday

It was this question that started off our  big math learning today:
In our attempt to answer this question we explored fractions, using the strategies of division, doubles, and multiplication.  We used the calendar as a reference and found out that the middle of the month is the 15th (tomorrow).  We then began exploring other numbers to see if we could divide them in half.  For example:   half of 12 is 6,  half of 30 is 15, half of 16 is 8.  Why?  Because 6+6 = 12, 6x2 = 2, 12 divided by 2 = 6.  See how many numbers you can divide exactly in 1/2 with equal parts.
Guess what else?  This math exploration teaches us the two times table.  This led us on to practicing  place value and decomposing numbers to add 2 and 3 digit together, using the white boards.  Decomposition (expanded form) helps us visualize numbers and allow us to use our mental math strategies in efficient ways.  For example:  236 + 13 = ?
200 + 30 +6     10 + 3
200  + 30 + 10 = 240
3 + 6 = 9
240 + 9 = 249

We started our new spelling program last week and we finished our last two lessons today which means that tomorrow is our first spelling test.

"The straightforward lessons in Spelling Mastery combine phonemic, morphemic, and whole-word instruction to make spelling easier to learn and pave the way for effective writing."

We would like to thank Jeff and his mom for coming in this afternoon so that he could share his wonderful violin playing.  This demonstration gave us many connections to our study of hearing and sound.  We confirmed some of our previous learning about sound and vibration and pitch.  We learned some new information about how sound is formed and travels.  Jeff personified our mantra practice makes progress.  It takes a lot of practice to learn how to play this musical instrument, just like it takes practice to study for spelling and build your mental math strategies.

Don't forget that I have given you homework to practice your doubles to 20 all week.  Say them out of order so you learn them solidly.  For example,  2 + 2 = 4, 7 + 7 = 14,  5 + 5 = 10, etc.

Upcoming Events this week:  Wednesday is Picture Retake day starting at 8:30.  If you want to retake your pictures, then come dressed up.
