Tuning in to Multiples on Tuesday

Who would have thought that we'd be exploring multiplication today?  Here's how we got there ... it all started with a question:  What is special about the number 9?  You were full of ideas, not surprising given that you are all brilliant thinkers.  I asked you to tap into your background knowledge about all the connections you could make to the number 9.  Here are some connections:

"It is the largest single digit before you go to the double digits."
"911"
"You can be nine years old"
"it is on a scale"
"it is on license plates"
"September is the 9th month."
"it is made up of multiples of 3."

We then started to notice the connections between 9 and 6.  They are both made up of multiples of 3 and this is when it started to get good ... we began to see that 3+3 = 6 and that 3 + 3 + 3 = 9    AHHH the magic of 3.
This prompted us to start experimenting with arrays.  An array is an arrangement of quantities or symbols in rows and columns.  Here is a video for you to watch if you want to learn more about creating arrays to understand multiplication.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rQRn-7uGaE
Did you know that arrays are everywhere in the world. Just pay attention on purpose and see what you can find.  Here's a link to videos with examples.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks-q6gKoQKs

Here are some photos of the arrays you made on white boards:

Persistence pays off - here's the answer to our Halloween math question yesterday -- How proud you should be!

Skip counting is really important for multiplication because we are using repeated addition to work with numbers in groups.  Here is an introduction to multiplication video to check out:  https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/cc-3rd-mult-div-topic/cc-3rd-mult/v/multiplication-intro
