Mindful Memories of Remembrance

Why is it important to remember?

Mindful awareness and deep gratitude  was definitely the vibe in our classroom today.  We have an important ceremony happening on Thursday to honor the efforts of the special Canadian service men, women and animals who fought to protect us.  We used a new graphic organizer called a RAN (Reading and Analyzing Non-Fiction Text) chart to understand the message, and main ideas of several videos about Remembrance Day.    We tapped into our background knowledge first to see how much we think we know about this day.  Then we watched and based on the evidence in the video we confirmed the information we already knew was correct.  Finally, we watched one more time  to record  new information and to write down some of our wonderings about this complex topic.

Here are some links to the videos we watched while using the RAN chart:   Animals and Humans of War, The Poppy Story,  The Poppy Lady

Have a look at some of our competed RAN charts.

Did you know that there are different colors of poppies for Remembrance?  Red is for the humans, purple is for the animals who lost their lives and white represents peace.  Here is a link for you to learn more about the white poppy: White Poppy for a Culture of Peace

One of the big questions that came out of our conversations today was:  Why do we even have war?

Speaking of being mindful, a website for you to explore at home is:  Mindfulness for Children

Every week we watch video messages about the upcoming events and expected routines at Ken Taylor  School Here is a link for you to have a look at them KTS weekly announcement
