Wondering about symbols on Wednesday. Mindful Thoughts on Thursday

We started Wondering Wednesday by asking the following question:  I wonder what a symbol for the value responsibility would look like?  You used global mind to come up some very creative symbols to represent this value.  We quickly realized and talked about how the reading powers helped us to visualize, connect, question and infer to transform our thinking about what responsibility means.  Have a look at some of our ideas:
You all sparked each other's thinking and came up with some meaningful symbols such as a star to represent doing your best, a person standing really straight like a proud soldier, a panther to represent protecting endangered species, a hand to show offering a helping hand, a peace sign to show that responsibility means keeping peace in our world, a leaf to represent growth, in other words taking responsibility for your learning, but also to protect the growth of all things in nature.
This conversation connected us back to our work on Tuesday with the picture books and we had a specific connection to Malala,  an incredible girl from Pakistan who stands up for girls' right to education.  Talk about an ambassador and activist!  We began to investigate child rights and learned about the United Nations and unicef (United Nations International Child Emergency Fund).  We watched a video of Malala asking the UN to take action for protecting these child rights.  Here are some links for you to watch:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEswHDTMdck
As global citizens, we are learning about the rights of all children all over the world.  Here is an image of these rights.  We are learning that not all children have the same rights as us in Canada.

This conversation then, led us to the global goals and the world's commitment to address climate action, extreme poverty and inequality and injustice.  Here is a link to the website globalgoals.org http://www.globalgoals.org/

Thinking Thursday gave us an opportunity to explore a book called Mindful ABCs.
We decided to take turns reading each page.  First, we tried the big embassy space in our learning commons, then moved to the hallway outside our classroom and ended up in our own room 123.  This book certainly sparked our reading powers.  It helped us visualize the mindful words, we had multiple connections to our daily conversations and we asked ourselves questions about the animals portrayed in this book and inferenced why the author chose each animal.  We really tapped into our background knowledge and our thinking was transformed.  Here are some photos to share:
